Zanzibar

Zanzibar is perfect for the ultimate escape. Zanzibar has unique and stunning islands left to be discovered. Underwater is a paradise; if you are a diving or snorkelling lover then Zanzibar is a perfect destination or a wonderful place to spend a few days and relax, to round off visits to the national parks or climbing the Kilimanjaro. The perfect combination of unspoilt coastlines, white sand beaches, fresh food and hospitality. Zanzibar has become synonymous with beautiful white sand beaches and stunning coral reefs in crystal clear waters.

The archipelago consists of two islands Unguja and Pemba. Where Unguja is famous for its beaches, resorts and historic Stone Town; Pemba is sometimes known as ‘The Green Island’ and is known for its spice production. That is where Zanzibar’s name of ‘spice island ‘originated from; it was the centre of the spice trade. The island offers ultimate beach and leisure experience, in a place full of history. One of the most fascinating things about Zanzibar is its history and cultural heritage which was mostly influenced by Persians, Arabs and India. This complex history resulted from Zanzibar’s location, being a perfect stop-off point for traders. India probably visited Zanzibar in the 1st century AD; then the Portuguese colonised the island from the 1500’s up to 1690’s when it fell under the Sultan of Oman. In 1890 Zanzibar came under British rule until 1963. Zanzibar got its independence and in 1964 Zanzibar and Tanganyika joined to form Tanzania, the union of Zanzibar and Tanzania.

Many people come to Tanzania for their dream safari experience, but this idyllic archipelago is a great destination in its own right, or as a place to take a few days to relax after a safari in Tanzania’s very own slice of paradise.
