Mikumi National Park

Mikumi is a vast, sprawling national park. Open grasslands dominate in the flood plain, eventually merging with the Miombo woodland which cover the lower hills. Mikumi forms the northern border of the Selous Game Reserve. This park is divided into two distinct regions: the northwest alluvial plains of the Mkata River Basin, with its savannah landscape where acacia and palms grow; and the less hospitable and less accessible region to the southwest. To the west of the park, the Rubeho Mountains offer a striking silhouette. More readily accessible than other parks in the area, Mikumi National Park is a great destination for game viewing year all year round, but particularly during the dry season, from May to October.

The Mkata floodplain is an ideal place to spot hippos wallow in pools and lions relax up trees survey. Watch vast herds of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, and impala that roam the grasslands and see elephants seeking the shade of acacia.

Discover Mikumi ‘s African Wild Dog population and its large eland population, a vast number of antelope families cut a striking figure as they graze on the open fields, and listen to the unique sounds of over 400 species of birds.
