You can enjoy a truly memorable experience in the Serengeti. Game drives and hot air balloon safaris are two of many options available. Visit the Olduvai Gorge, Lake Natron, Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, or go on a flying safari. You can visit at any time of the year but the best time to visit is December to July for the great wildebeest migration.
The home of the legendary Great Wildebeest Migration, zebras and gazelle, the park stretches north to the Kenyan border and west to the edge of Lake Victoria in northern Tanzania. More than 2 million animals migrate north into the Maasai Mara before returning to the Ngorongoro region. The savannah plains of the park are home to Africa’s most famous animals. The Serengeti is fascinating throughout the year. It is the best place in East Africa to spot lions and leopards in the wild, and is home to the entirety of the ‘Big Five’. A Unesco World Heritage Site since 1981, Serengeti National Park offers an exceptional and complete safari experience.
Home to almost 3000 lions, more than a thousand leopards and an estimated 9000 hyena, the park is a great place to see predators going about their grisly but essential business. Crocodiles that live in the Grumeti River are renowned as the largest in
Africa. Feasting on the casualties from the river crossings of the wildebeest they can grow up to 6 metres (20 feet) long! Perhaps most startling about the park is just how ever present the animals are. Serengeti is home to an endless list of wildlife including lions, leopards, rhinoceros, elephants, buffalos, and cheetahs. Many predators can be found in the park, including all three species of African jackal. Wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, impala hartebeest, topi and waterbuck wander the grasslands. More than 500 species of birds, insects and small creatures also call the Serengeti home.
It is important to appreciate the sheer size of the Serengeti when planning to visit the park. Its North, South, East, West, and Central regions each offer a different game drive experience as well as different accommodation options. The Great Wildebeest Migration passes through some of the areas more than others.
There is accommodation to suit all aspirations, tastes and budgets, from humble camp sites to the luxurious Four Seasons Serengeti. The sheer scope of the park means that it can provide a really fulfilling short visit but has plenty to offer for those wishing to explore for several days, even weeks.
