The Cradle of Mankind

Eastern African is the birthplace of the earliest known humans; the cradle of mankind at Olduvai Gorge is definitely worth a visit. Discover the excavation sites of Olduvai Gorge, the Laetoli footprint, rock paintings, and visit the Museum where hundreds of stone tools and fossilized bones are kept and displayed. The area is between the Ngorongoro and Serengeti national parks. Olduvai Gorge holds the earliest evidence of the existence of our human ancestors, 1.7 million years ago. The site was discovered by Dr Louis Leakey and his wife Mary Leakey in 1959.
